Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) stricture refers to a narrowing at the point where the ureter, which carries urine from the kidney to the bladder, exits the kidney. This can prevent urine from draining adequately from the kidney, and over time can negatively affect kidney function.
UPJ stricture can be congenital or can occur due to acquired causes. In some individuals the condition can progress without symptoms for a long time, while in later stages it can lead to problems such as flank pain, urinary tract infections or loss of kidney function.
Diagnosing UPJ stricture involves evaluating the patient's clinical complaints, imaging methods and kidney function tests together. The degree of the stricture and its effects on the kidney are analyzed in detail with ultrasonography, computed tomography and nuclear medicine studies.
Based on the findings, whether surgery is needed and the most suitable treatment method are planned specifically for the patient.
Laparoscopic surgery is preferred as a minimally invasive and effective method for treating UPJ strictures. In this method, the narrowed area is repaired and urine flow is restored using a special camera and surgical instruments through small surgical incisions.
Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic surgery offers advantages such as less tissue trauma, a lower level of pain and a faster recovery. It aims to achieve safe and successful results in suitable patients.
After surgery, patients are placed on a regular follow-up program. Check-up visits and necessary imaging are performed to confirm that kidney function is preserved and that urine flow continues normally.
